Stress Management & Self-Care: Identifying and Handling Stress for Case Managers

This interactive workshop will begin by exploring the daily sources of stress in a case manager’s life. Participants will discuss the practicality of several self-care methods to avoid burnout and manage stress. The presenter will offer on-the-spot techniques of identifying and managing routine stress and burnout, including developing a personal crisis plan to stay well. Discussions will focus on ways to become "stress resilient".
Participants will be able to:
1. Define Stress & Burnout
2. Identify the typical sources of stress in case management
3. Identify common symptoms of stress and discuss at least 3 stress reduction techniques
Dennis has worked in behavioral health for more than 42 years. He began as a Registered Music Therapist, served as Team Leader of the Community Treatment Teams (CTT), and Training Specialist at Behavioral Health Training and Education Network (BHTEN). Dennis authored the Philadelphia Behavioral Health Case Management Orientation curriculum. He has presented at countless local, state, and national conferences. Topics have included the CTT “Philadelphia Experience,” Time & Stress Management, Training Case Managers, Crisis Management, and Enriching Recovery through Cultural Competence. Dennis has a B.S. in Education, a Master of Music Therapy Degree and post-graduate work in Health Care Administration. Dennis is a certified trainer through the Crisis Prevention Institute, holds an Advanced Certificate of Culturally Competent Human Services from Temple University and is certified in Mental Health First Aid. Dennis recently retired (in January 2019) as Program Director of BHTEN in Philadelphia, PA and he serves as a National Association of Case Management board member. Dennis was awarded the National Association of Case Management Founders Award in 2018 for “commitment and leadership to the profession of Case Management across the nation.”
