LGBTQ and Intellectual Disabilities

Mary Rita Weller, Assistant Professor at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania

Professionals, such as case managers, and family and friends are often at a loss of how to address issues related to intimacy for individuals with intellectual disabilities. When individuals with IDD also demonstrate sexual attraction beyond heterosexual, there is added stress for professionals and family and friends. Individuals with IDD are already dealing with a minority status and part of a vulnerable population. Being part of another vulnerable group as identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (or sometimes questioning) (LGBTQ) can be daunting for those who want to support individuals' sexual freedom and rights. This webinar will provide case managers with tools and resources to support individuals with IDD that also identify as being LGBTQ.

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe therapeutic interventions for supporting individuals that have an intellectual disability and identify as a sexual minority (LGBTQ);

2. State evidence-based practices related to supporting individuals that have an intellectual disability and identify as a sexual minority (LGBTQ);

3. Respond to the needs of LGBTQ individuals that have an intellectual disability by identifying community resources.
